Activities in Scotland   Scotland Tour Guides Search

Winter in Scotland is a glorious adventure. The high peaks of the Highland mountains are perfect for all manner of winter activities. You can still enjoy the same activities as in summer, such as walking and hiking, It’s just that you have to dress warmer and the sights and sounds are different.

Some of the winter activities that you can enjoy when you visit Scotland during the colder months of the year include:

  • Ice climbing. Scotland is one of the best places for ice climbing in Britain. There are many providers that offer these services and have guides available for the activities. In order to take part in ice climbing you need to have physical strength and endurance as well as mountaineering skills. The Ice Factor located in Glencoe and Kinlochleven offer lessons for those who have never enjoyed this activity as well as full expedition climbs. The Glenmore Lodge in Aviemore also has a full range of services to give you the ultimate thrill in winter activities.
  • Skiing and Snowboarding. You don’t need to have top of the line skis to enjoy the thrill of the snow in Scotland. There are three ski areas in Cairngorms National Park and two in Lochaber for you to choose from. A true skiing vacation will let you test the slopes on all five. Along with the exhilarating slopes, the scenery is spectacular and novices can partake of lessons before they try the higher slopes.
  • Sled Dog racing. This is the fastest growing winter sport in Scotland. Visitors can watch the races or try their hand at handling the Huskies. Better yet, bring your own dogs and take part in the races. You might come out a winner. Dumfries and Galloway is a centre for training and racing sled dogs and schedules at least five of these races every year.
  • Hillwalking. There are many locations for hillwalking in the winter in Scotland. You can actually spend the whole season in Scotland if you want to enjoy them all. Some of the popular locations are Ben Lomond and Ben Vorlich in Central Scotland; the Cairngorms in Eastern Scotland; Glen Coe and the Highlands in the west and Torridon and Gairloch in the Northwest.

Winter transforms Scotland into a winder wonderland where the heather is replace by snow and the panoramic view becomes more beautiful than ever.
