Surrounding area: The picturesque town of Inveraray, overlooked by the fairytale castle of the Dukes of Argyll is the ideal location for exploring the region. It is an area of startling landscapes and dramatic scenery; tumbling rivers wooded hills majestic mountains and, quiet lochans and secret places. Pursuits for the hardy and energetic include climbing, walking, sea and loch fishing, riding, boating and golf at the local course. Those who prefer the gentler pleasures will find much to do and see - visiting castles, gardens, working museums and wildlife centres, bird watching or just enjoying one of the many touring possibilities. And every evening there is the warmth of the Fernpoint welcome to return to.

Inveraray offers a wide choice for those who wish to explore the south west highlands. Loch Awe, one of the most lovely in Scotland is only a short trip away. The Kintyre and Cowal peninsulas abound with magical spots waiting to be discovered. The island-studded coast of Lorn and the glorious scenery of Appin are within easy reach. Eagles sore over loch Etive and the brooding splendours of Glencoe and Loch Rannoch are not to be missed. The Fernpoint is a historical (Grade A listed) building, being the first of Inveraray new town, constructed between 1748 and 1753 by John Richardson.

Richardson was a local merchant who was granted a tack or lease to build his house on Fern Point by the Duke of Argyll in recognition of his services in the Jacobite rebellion. In 1746 he served the Duke without fee under Archibald Campbell of Ballamore, at Duart Castle in Mull and later was to become Lord Provost of Inveraray. Richardson's tack was granted as early as 1748, though his house was not finished "in a more expensive manner than at first proposed" until 1753 and in recognition of his enterprise his tack duty for the first year was fixed at 6 pence and he was exempted from "all Cess Schoolmasters Salaries and other Public Burdens". Fernpoint is a fine Georgian building with an unusual left hand thread circular turnpike stair in the turret, serving the three stories of the main building.
