Surrounding area: Inveraray is the seat of the Duke of Argyll, and an interesting town with its own attractions. It was one of the first planned towns in Scotland. It is also a fabulous touring base for the rest of Argyll & Bute and further afield to the Highlands. The 18th century castle, home to the Duke of Argyll, is open to visitors during the summer months. Because of our home’s historic connections to the Duke of Argyll and family we are able to offer our residents a 20% discount off the entrance fee to the castle – if you plan to visit, please ask us for a voucher. There are also some lovely walks in and around the grounds. There is an annual traditional Highland Gathering held there in July, it is well worth attending if you happen to be visiting at that time of year, to see the dancers, hear the pipers and join in the festivities. The historic Jail is a fun trip and you can be taken unawares when you visit the courtroom or open a door to a cell or if one of the prison warders catches you, so watch out. Just round the corner from the Jail is a wee lane past the kilt shop which takes you onto the water front and if you stroll that way you will pass our own wee one-bedroom self catering cottage "Para Handy’s Cottage". Neil Munro the author of the well-known Para Handy tales was born in this cottage and his writings reflect much of his experience growing up in Inveraray. In the other direction from the Jail down the main street past the shops lies the pier, with the Arctic Penguin (the maritime museum) and the Vital Spark – a "Clyde Puffer" as in Para Handy’s tales, tied up alongside. Inveraray’s Bell Tower, in the centre of town, is also well known for containing Scotland’s finest bells, the second heaviest ring of 10 in the world. You can pay a small fee to climb the tower to see them and view the wonderful views over the town and Loch Fyne. If you enjoy exploring; Crarae Gardens are a short drive away (turn right on leaving Rudha-Na-Craige) this is a unique 50 acre site and is famed for its collection of Rhododendron and stunning woodland gardens around the Crarae burn and gorge. Just 15 minutes drive in the other direction (beside Oyster Bar) is Ardkinglas with some of Britain’s biggest trees. If you enjoy gardens, try Arduaine near Kilmelford (about half way between Lochgilphead and Oban) and Bowmore near Dunoon, there are loads more gardens in Argyll to visit. In under an hour you can be in Oban town with its picturesque and active bay or down to Loch Lomond for a visit. Or head out to Lochgilphead, only half an hour away; a further 15 minutes drive takes you to historic Kilmartin Glen with standing stones and ancient burial grounds. Throughout Argyll and the West Coast spectacular harbours, islands, glens, hills and water are all going to vie for your attention on any drive so take your time and enjoy the scenery and stop off in many of the little villages and towns. If you’re looking for a day trip, there are some great circuitous routes, or even head up to Glencoe and see a bit more of the Highlands. If you have not brought your car or just don’t want to do the driving; buses, taxis and private tour operators are available locally. You are close to the many outstanding beauty spots and historical sites in Argyll.
