About Russian Tavern at the Port Royal Hotel: Seashore village inn at Port Bannatyne, two miles north of Rothesay on The Isle of Bute, (bus from the ferry every half hour.) Bought by Russians 8 years ago The Russian Tavern serves freshly landed seafood, haut Tsarist Classic Cuisine, live local Real Ales direct from the cask, and Russian wines, beers and vodkas. There are four inexpensive guest rooms. The views from the Tavern across the yacht bay to the Argyll Mountains are truly stunning.
Surrounding area: The Isle of Bute is 35 minutes sailing from Wemyss Bay at the mouth of the River Clyde, on the A78 from Greenock to Largs. The Russian Tavern is two miles north of the ferry port, Rothesay, at Port Bannatyne, a yacht and fishing bay where time has stood still (the inn was built in 1810 A.D.) Curlews, oyster-catchers and seals share the beach, while wild deer and hares graze the golf-course to the rear.
Additional notes: Count Nikolai Tolstoy, staying at The Russian Tavern one weekend, declared at dinner: "This is the best Beef Strogonoff I have tasted...EVER!" Not surprising as Natalie Lavrenko, the chef from St. Petersburg, had accessed the kitchen archives of The Tsar and documented the actual recipes of Count Strogonoff. With free-range mature highland-cattle rump beef from Orkney, Hungarian smoked paprika, local wild fungi, and in-house Smetana, the reproduction is authentic...served with latkas, red cabbage baked with apple and sauerkraut.
