Welcome aboard the Tall Ship Glenlee. Built at Port Glasgow in 1896, she is one of only 5 Clydebuilt sailing ships remaining afloat in the world.
Built when Glasgow was recognised as the Second City of the Empire, the Glenlee was constructed using the raw materials of coal and iron from the Lanarkshire coalfields. Step aboard and imagine the deafening noise as the Black Gang of the Port Glasgow Shipyard hammered a thousand rivets and shaped the beams, plates and frames into the hull form of the Glenlee.
Leave Port Glasgow for a voyage back in time to relive the excitement and danger of rounding Cape Horn in the teeth of a merciless gale. Imagine running before gales of the Roaring Forties in the Great Southern Ocean or sleeping under canvas in the idyllic calm of horse latitudes of the tropics. Experience the courage of the sailors as they worked hundreds of feet above a foaming ocean or struggled waist deep in the maelstrom of the main deck awash with angry ocean.
A visit to the Glenlee is both captivating and informative and not to be missed! Family and tour group visits are given a warm welcome, why not make a day of it and enjoy a meal or a drink in the Pumphouse cafe bar.
Conference and Function Facilities The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour is Glasgow's most unusual venue for corporate and private functions for parties of up to 350. Entertain your guests aboard the 103-year old Glenlee or in the historic B-listed Pumphouse building. A high standard of hospitality and catering will ensure your event's success.
The Pumphouse Visitor Centre and Quays Glasgow once boasted that her harbour berthed ships from every corner of the world and that the banks of the Clyde were lined with shipyards that built the best ships in the world. The Pumphouse was built in 1877 to produce hydraulic power for the Queen's Dock, which enabled Glasgow to capitalise on her lead as the world's greatest shipping and shipbuilding river.
Inside the Pumphouse today you will find galleries with exhibitions, which tell the story of the great river and its harbour. See Glasgow during the ice age and trace the development of the Clyde from the first shipyard at Kelvinhaugh in 1830 through to the opening of the Queen's Dock and the construction of Yorkhill Quay.
Step back in time and visit the site of the Kelvinhaugh Ferry, which carried thousands of people across the river to and from Govan. Or retrace the first stage in a journey to the New World from the old Anchor Warehouse and quays at Yorkhill. The Pumphouse has a piece of history for everyone.
When they returned to port sailors always headed for the nearest hostelry, so why not take a break and relax in the friendly atmosphere of the Pumphouse cafe bar with Glasgow's finest view down the River Clyde. And don't forget to take home a keepsake of your voyage from our nautical souvenir shop...with a range of unusual gifts to help remind you of your visit.
