Welcome to the Almond Valley Heritage Centre an innovative museum exploring the history and environment of West Lothian. The centre encompasses a wide range of indoor attractions on a 20-acre site and will be enjoyed by every member of the family. It is suggested that you allow at least two hours for your visit.
Mill Farm is home to all manner of friendly farmyard animals. Clydesdale horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats; chickens in the byres, ducks and geese in the pond and rabbits in their warren. There are often lambs, chicks, and other new arrivals and cows are, milked daily during much of the year. Enclosures are specially designed to allow young visitors to get close to the animals.
The Shale Oil Museum tells the story of Scotland's pioneering oil industry. Walk through an oilworker's home, descend into the shale mine and wonder at the array of lamps, candles and other products of this famous industry.
Livingston Mill served the local farming community for more than two centuries and much of the original water-driven machinery has now been restored to use. Vintage farm machinery is displayed around the farm and is sometimes demonstrated in action in the surrounding fields.
There is plenty of room to run around and let off steam. Walk along the riverside to the nature trail, or take a ride on the narrow-gauge railway. There are outdoor picnic and play areas, whilst under cover of the oilshale adventure zone, youngsters can rampage around the derelict oil works. Especially for the under fives, there's a soft play and pedal tractor course.
