The Northern Lighthouse Board was created by Act of Parliament in 1786. Kinnaird Head was the very first lighthouse to be built by the NLB (Northern Lighthouse Board) in 1787 and the only lighthouse to be built on top of a fortified castle.
In 1824 Robert Stevenson, Engineer to the NLB, reconstructed the lighthouse inside Kinnaird Castle. In 1851 his son, Alan Stevenson, improved and developed the light and lighthouse keepers' cottages. In 1902, David A. Stevenson, Alan's nephew, continued the great Stevenson engineering tradition by installing a new lens and developing the cottages at Kinnaird Head that we see today.
Decommissioned in 1991, and maintained for the nation, with the support of Historic Scotland and Scotland's Lighthouse Museum Trust, the original lighthouse and engine room is now preserved, as they were the day the last keeper left. The new Museum of Scottish Lighthouses boasts the largest and best collection of lighthouse lenses and equipment in the UK.
Discover the unique story of the Stevenson family, lighthouse engineers to the world, in the Stevenson Gallery and the multi-screen audio-visual, which tells the story of the lighthouse service in Scotland.
Our lighthouse guides will take you to the top of the light and the magnificent panoramic view of the Buchan coast and the Port of Fraserburgh below.
