Randolphs Leap Forres

Randolphs Leap
Forres
Grampian

This striking and colourful valley of the River Findhorn forms a gorge known as Randolph's Leap, some 7 mile south of Forres.
The name is a misnomer; apparently, after Robert the Bruce had created the Earl of Moray (Thomas Randolph) he gave him land, which had previously belonged to the Cummings. In retaliation, the Cummings set out to raid Darnaway Castle but was ambushed at Whitemires.
In the resulting escape, Alistair Cumming leapt across the narrow gap, ensuring his freedom from the pursuing Randolph's men.

Dedicated canoeists can often be seen trying to tackle the fierce rocky gorge and at high spate, the sheer force of the muddy brown waters creates a spout that can at times rise to some 3 metres above water level.
