This monastery was founded in 1230 but was originally a Valliscaulian house. It was burned in 1390 by the 'Wolfe of Badenoch' at around the same time as the Cathedral in Elgin. In 1454 it became a priory of the Benedictine Abbey of Dunfermline and so remained until the suppression of monastic life in 1560.
The buildings were allowed to fall into ruin until 1948 when Benedictine monks returned to restore it. There are monastic church services open to the public, a visitor centre with gift shop and gardens. Guided tours are available on request with good explanatory notices. Disabled access.
