The forming of Buckie District Fishing Heritage Museum
It was suggested by Mr Ronald Stewart of Highfield Road that Buckie should have it's own Fishing Heritage Museum.
With this aim in view a meeting was held in Mr Stewart's home on 12th March 1986 to see what could be done about it. Present at the meeting of like minded people were Messrs. Ronald Stewart, Dr. Eric Hendry, Charles Spencer, Peter Murray (Stone), Peter Bruce (all from Buckie), Peter Slater (Buckpool), Peter Flett (Findochty), George Smith (Portknockie),George Slater (Ianstown) and Adam Robertson (Buckpool).
To get the project off the ground each member contributed £10 to form a fund for buying stationery etc. It then remained to elect office bearers. It was unanimously decided to appoint Mr. Peter Slater as President, Mr Peter Murray as Vice President, Mr William Smith as Treasurer, Mr Adam Robertson as Secretary and with Mr Ronald Stewart performing the duty of Records Officer.
After various proposals were put forward it was decided that the first formal meeting of the new formed "Buckie District Fishing Heritage Society" take place in the Town House on 23rd April 1986 at 7P.M. under the duly appointed office bearers. In 1997 the name was changed to the Buckie Fishing Heritage Museum.
At the formal inaugural meeting of the new society, the adoption of the minutes of the previous meeting, held in Mr. Stewart's house was proposed and seconded. The duly appointed officials to serve a period of one year from the date of the meeting. At the suggestion of the president, the rest of the members of the previous meeting were elected committee members.
The newly formed organisation secured permission to use a room at the rear of the library for the public display of artefacts and photographs.
However, the library became so popular that after a few seasons the room used by "The Heritage" was required for an extension of the library. The Heritage at this stage was given the use of the caretaker's cottage behind the library. Because the building hadn't been occupied for several years it was damp, with the wallpaper peeling off the walls and showing signs of water penetration. However, the committee members set to and stripped the walls, repaired broken plaster, prepared and painted ceilings and woodwork, waterproofed the plaster and papered the walls.
After repairing several broken windows and vandals putting burning material through the front door letter box, all the windows back and front doors were shuttered and the letterbox closed up, thus discouraging vandals from doing further damage. A large illustrated directional sign was erected on the street entrance. Over the years the committee have installed strip lighting and interior floodlights for the benefit of visitors wishing to take photographs of the many various displays and the alcove in the photograph room and a china cabinet was secured to hold some very valuable artefacts.
Since then the 'Heritage' museum has grown from strength to strength and is now 'bursting at the seams' with all the artefacts and photographs handed in by a very appreciative public.
