Raasay
Isle of Skye
Highlands
w: Website
Raasay Heritage Society was formed in 1988 to preserve and promote the language and culture of the island for future generations and to show visitors all aspects of the island's unique past and its unusual geological and botanical features.
In 1994, with the backing of the Local Enterprise Company, the Society became a charitable trust.
Local people run the Museum on a voluntary basis. Opening times are limited but outwith these hours special arrangements for viewing may be made by contacting the secretary or chairman.
At present, the premises occupied by the trust consist of one small room in the Community West Wing of Raasay House, which is 'leased' to the Trust by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise. In order to preserve Raasay's heritage for future generations we need to expand.
With your support you can help us pursue our aims.
The Museum welcomes, information and artefacts to add to its ever-increasing collection. On display are the following items to list but a few:-
- the 200-year-old MacLeod Clan Crest

- an extensive display of Raasay's varied geological structure and a comprehensive selection of fossils;
- reference and record books.
and for more recent times...
- a fine collection of Victorian photographs
- an illustrated history of the iron mines worked by the German POWs and Raasay inhabitants during the Great War of 1914 to 1918

The trust is a member of Feisean nan Garidheal and each year, in February, we run a small feis (a cultural festival), which offers a few days tuition in Piping, Fiddle, Accordion, Gaelic, Highland, and Step Dancing and Gaelic Singing.
