The castle is first recorded when John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, died there about 1303. The structure is considerably older and was probably built between 1258 and 1275. In September 1303 Edward I stayed in the castle. Traditionally it was from Lochindorb that Alexander, Wolf of Badenoch, raided Elgin Cathedral.
