On 1 May 1690 the Jacobite force of MacDonalds, Macleans, Camerons, MacPhersons and Grants of Invermoriston were camped on the Haughs of Cromdale. A surprise attack by Sir Thomas Livingstone, Commander of Government Troops, and led by local Glen Grant men killed or captured 400 Jacobites. The Battle of Cromdale has been immortalised by the pipe tune "The Haughs of Cromdale" as well as the ballad. The rebel forces were completely dispersed and it was another 25 years until the next Jacobite Rising of 1715.
