The ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe, Floors Castle stands overlooking the River Tweed and against the backdrop of the Cheviot Hills, just west of Kelso. It is really more of a mansion than a castle, but it is regarded as the largest inhabited mansion in Scotland. Although it was built in the early 18th century, it does have historical significance. A holly tree on the grounds marks the spot where James II lost his life fighting the English at Roxburghe Castle in 1460.
Floors Castle was originally a tower house, but in 1721, the first Duke commissioned William Arden to make renovations so that it would be more of a Georgian country house. In the 1800’s the sixth Duke commissioned William Playfair to make renovations and the result was the fairytale castle that we see today.
The elaborate attention to detail is evident as soon as you step through the entrance. The entrance hall has a fretwork ceiling and Louis XVI wall lights. The furniture in the room, such as the table and the bookcase, are the original furnishings. Experience the view of the surrounding countryside from the windows of the Ante Room. There is a 15th century tapestry hanging over the fireplace and marvel at the work of art with its gold and silk thread.
As you continue through the castle, you will see an extensive collection of original furniture, paintings and porcelain. Each of the rooms is named, such as the Bird Room, with its collection of mounted birds, reflecting the scientific interests of the 6th Duke. Not only will you see common species of birds, but there are also many models here of birds that have been extinct for quite some time. The Ballroom is an impressive sight with its two walls of large bay windows and two large Savonnerie carpets.
Outside the castle the view is just as breathtaking. You can walk through the woodlands or along the river to take in the sights and sounds of the wildlife and view the beautiful blooming plants. Visit the Walled Garden, where Queen Victoria too tea in 1867 and see the original Victorian iron poles holding the array of colourful flowers.
Other points of interest include the Adventure Playland, Star Plantation Woodland, the Millenium Reserve and many more. Any visit to the Scottish Borders has to include a visit to Floors Castle to make sure you experience all that this part of Scotland has to offer.
