Eilean Donan Castle is located near the scenic village of Dornie on the main tourist route to the Isle of Skye. The island is called Eilean Donan, which means "the island of Donan" and has been fortified for the past 800 years. The present castle is relatively new, having been built in the early part of the 20th century. However, it was built on the site of the ruins of the castle built in the 13th century, so it still has the history of the clans that once lived here, especially as a refuge for Robert the Bruce.
When you visit Eilean Donan castle, you can explore every inch of the site. The guides will show you around and walk you through the pages of history from the time of the Vikings to the movies that featured this castle and through the years of turmoil in the Jacobite Rebellion. Learn the history of the castle when it was the seat of the kingdom of the Lord of the Isles.
The Billeting Room of Eilean Donan Castle contains many artefacts of the Clan MacRae and the local area. It is here you can start your journey back in time to revisit the history that this castle has buried underneath its walls. The Banqueting Hall is designed in the style of a medieval banquet room. You can see the fine furniture, portraits of the family and a lock of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s hair.
The massive walls of Eilean Donan castle are reminiscent of the same style that Scottish castles were built in the early days, but the timber for this castle came from the Douglas Firs of British Columbia, Canada. They were a gift from the Macraes that had emigrated to Canada.
There is a recreated kitchen in Eilean Donan Castle and the bedrooms are also open for visitors. They have tartan fabric on the floors with the MacRae colours, a gift from a company owned by a great-grandson of the family.
Outside the Eilean Donan Castle, the view is astounding. On a clear day, you can see the Isle of Skye from the castle. The castle was the setting for several movies, such as The World is Not Enough, Highlander and Loch Ness. It is perhaps the most photographed castle in Scotland and is in demand for weddings and special celebrations. It is under the management of the Conchra Charitable Trust.
When you want to visit the Eilean Donan Castle, the surrounding towns and villages have all the accommodations you will need. Stay in Dornie or the Kyle of Lochalsh. A visit here is also an excellent idea for a day trip from one of the larger cities because it is only about two hours from Inverness.
