If you want to visit a genuine fairytale castle, then Glamis Castle is the one you should make plans to visit. This castle is located right next to the village of Forfar in Angus, Scotland. The Earl and Countess of Strathmore are the owners of this castle and they open their home to the public every summer. This is one of the castles in Scotland that is not run by the National Trust for Scotland. It was the childhood home of the Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Princess Margaret was born here. This castle is also featured on the ten-pound note of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Visitors to Glamis Castle can gaze in amazement at the intricate details in the plasterwork of the ceilings. There is a tearoom where you can get refreshments when you come here and the garden and grounds are open for you to stroll about freely. Legend has it that this castle is haunted. In fact it may be one of the most haunted castles in Britain. One of the ghosts is that of Earl Beardie, a cruel man who played cards on the Sabbath with the Devil. Many visitors claim to have heard the sound of rolling dice or loud shouts from parts of the castle.
Glamis Castle dates back to 1372 and has been home to many Scottish and then British Royalty since then. It has been visited by dignitaries from all over the world and was the favourite holiday place of Queen Elizabeth as a child. The castle was the setting for MacBeth, the famous Shakespearean play. It is not known whether Shakespeare ever visited the castle, but it is likely he would have heard the ghost stories surrounding the castle and its connections to the Royal Family at the time. Other ghosts include the Grey Lady, said to be the spirit of Lady Janet Douglas, burned as a witch at the stake, the ghost of a Negro boy, and the ghost of a woman without a tongue.
The gardens of Glamis Castle are glorious, no matter what time of year you visit. Spring is perhaps the best time to visit, when the area is covered in daffodils. During the summer, you can witness the dazzling blooms of rhododendrons and azaleas and in autumn, you are in for a colourful treat in the changing colours of the trees. Take a walk on the nature trail along the banks of the Glamis Burn and see the wildlife of the area in their natural habitat.
It is quite easy to reach Glamis Castle by driving either the M80 from Glasgow, M90 from Edinburgh, and the A90 from Aberdeen and Dundee. You can also take the bus or the train from Dundee. Take the trip when you are in this part of the country – you’ll be glad you did.
