Walk the Royal Mile to see Edinburgh Castle , an ancient stronghold located in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. This castle has actually been used as a military fortress since the 800’s and up until recent years it was still under the domain of the Ministry of Defence. Today it is managed by Historic Scotland and is one of the most important tourist destinations in the city.
When Edinburgh Castle was in use, access to it was restricted by having to use a steep road on the north side. The importance of protection is easily seen in the sheer cliffs protecting the other three sides of the castle. Today you can enter the castle through the Esplanade, where Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place. Panning your visit around this event will give you the chance to view this event as well.
When you visit Edinburgh Castle, there are several key features that you should include on your itinerary. These include St. Margaret’s Chapel, which is the oldest building in Edinburgh, dating back to the 1100’s. The Crown Square is the main courtyard that was developed in the 1400’s and the impressive Great Hall was built by James IV. Here you can also visit the Half Moon Battery, dating back to the late 1500’s and the Scottish War Memorial, which was erected following the First World War.
Other visitor attractions within Edinburgh Castle include the Prisoners of War exhibition, where you will learn of the castle’s role as a prison for sailors from many different countries in the 18th and 19th centuries. You can learn the story of the Scotland Crown Jewels at the Honours of the Kingdom exhibit and see the famous Stone of Destiny. This stone was taken to Westminster Abbey in 1296 and has only recently been returned to its rightful place. The National War Museum of Scotland is also housed here. You will not have any difficulty knowing what time it is when you hear the One O’clock Gun and you can also find out about the history of keeping time.
Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline of Edinburgh just as much today as it did centuries ago when it was the focus of life in this area. From the volcanic rock, which forms the foundation of the castle, you have a panoramic view of the city. This castle is also a symbol of Scotland and its heritage as well as being part of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site.
