Lockerbie Travel Guide - Scotland

Located in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland, Lockerbie is a town of just over 4000 people. It is about 74 miles from Glasgow and 20 miles from the border with England. You won't have any difficulty getting to Lockerbie because it has a train station and it is just off the A74 Motorway.

In its early history, Lockerbie was an important centre for trading cattle and sheep. Due to this fact and its proximity to the English border, the economy of the town was also heavily dependent on trade with England. Archaeological evidence suggests that this area was inhabited as far back as the 10th century and the name of the town comes from the Old Norse language, meaning Loki's Village. You can visit the ruins of an old Roman camp, which suggests that the history of this town predates the Norse invaders.

The sight of the red stone buildings makes Lockerbie unique in that the sun or lack of it can change the impression one has of the town.

The Lockerbie Town Hall, which was completed in 1880, is an imposing building with an impressive Clock Tower. You can learn about the rescue work done with neglected and abused animals when you visit the Mossburn Animal Centre. This centre also does therapeutic work involving animals and children and adults. See a working sawmill when you visit the Rammerscales Sawmill and see how the trees are transformed into different kinds of lumber.

Lockerbie is most famous as being the site of the crash of Pan Am Flight 103. A bomb that had been planted in the aircraft exploded over Lockerbie, killing all the passengers and crew. 11 people from the town were also killed as a result of the crash. There are several memorials to this event, such as the stained glass windows in the Council Chambers. You can read the Book of Remembrance in the Memorial Room at Tundergarth. The Garden of Remembrance at the cemetery just outside of Lockerbie is another memorial to this tragic event.

Lockerbie is a town that has a golf course, several pubs and a wealth of accommodations. You can spend your time walking through the town and the countryside and shopping on High Street for unusual souvenirs of your visit. The time you spend here will help you make memories that will last forever.
