Scotland Travel Information

Driving in Scotland.

You must drive on the left. Be particularly careful when rejoining a road after a rest break or overnight stop.
Turning Right:
Use your mirrors to check the position of the vehicles behind you and when it is safe to do so, signal right and move to a position just left of the middle of the road. When there is a safe gap between you and the oncoming traffic, turn right, but look out for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Junctions:
There is no general priority rule, as priority is marked at most junctions. On a minor road you will see either a triangular 'GIVE WAY' or red 'STOP' sign. Many junctions will have only 'GIVE WAY' markings on the carriageway (dotted white lines and a white triangle on the carriageway). You must obey these signs.
Roundabouts:
At roundabouts give way to vehicles coming from the right unless road markings show otherwise. Drive around the roundabout clockwise, and signal left as you approach the exit you want to take.
Accidents:
If you are involved in an accident you must stop. Give details of your insurance to other drivers involved. If anyone is injured, you must also inform the police.
Motorways - No Stopping:
Use the hard shoulder only in an emergency. Emergency telephones are situated approximately every 1500 metres. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Keep within the speed limit. Keep left except when overtaking.
Speed Limits:
(In some built up areas the speed might be 20mph (32kph). These areas will be signposted.)
Urban roads 30mph / 48 kph
National limit 60mph / 96kph
Dual Carriageway 70mph / 112kph
Motorway 70mph / 112kph
