Dumbarton, a lovely community located about 13 miles from Glasgow, is a place where visitors can enjoy the best of Scottish history right alongside the best of modern Scotland.
Scenic and historic sights for all to enjoy
Just one glimpse around Dumbarton and you'll quickly understand the attraction and appeal of this unique community. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular, thanks to the town's location along the River Clyde's north bank near the entrance to Clyde Estuary. The River Leven also borders Dumbarton, making the town a terrific place to enjoy Scottish scenery.
Gaze out over the estuary for a wonderful view or simply stroll along the river bank to enjoy the sounds of flowing water and nature all around. Levengrove Park is perhaps the best place to appreciate and enjoy the natural beauty of Dumbarton. The park features open grassy areas perfect for a spring or summer picnic, plus walking paths throughout the park and alongside the River Leven.
If you're a sports fan, be sure to plan your visit during football season when the Dumbarton F.C. professional team is playing in town. Their home playing field, Strathclyde Homes Stadium, is not only a terrific place to watch a match but also a good place to catch a view of nearby Dumbarton Castle. You can even pick up a lasting souvenir of your visit by taking home a gold and black stripe jersey from the Dumbarton F.C. store.
To get a sense of the history of Dumbarton, start with a visit to the very famous Dumbarton Castle. This structure, located on rugged Dumbarton Rock, has been the sight of many of history's most notable events and has hosted many of history's most notable visitors. William Wallace was imprisoned there after being captured, Mary, Queen of Scots stayed there as a child, and both Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II spent time in the castle as well.
If the castle is not enough to capture your interest, then focus on Dumbarton Rock itself. During World War II it was often the target of bombing by the Germans in their efforts to destroy the Dumbarton Shipyards located nearby. Because of its substantial size and historic significance, Dumbarton Rock is protected by the government as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. This protection ensures Dumbarton Rock, along with Dumbarton Castle, will be protected and maintained now and into the future as important pieces of Scottish history.
