Lochwinnoch Travel Guide - Scotland

As the gateway to the 108 miles of the Muirshiel Regional Park, Lochwinnoch is a village in the Renfrewshire area of Scotland. If you are interested in learning about Scottish wildlife and birds, then this village is only 20 miles from Glasgow and is the perfect location for you. You can drive here or even take the train or bus. The more energetic can walk to the village by taking the cycle track from Glasgow to Gretna Green.

Lochwinnoch takes its name from Loch Winnoch, but the name has been changed to Castle Semple Loch. This was because the Semple family built a castle here and the town grew up around it. Loch Winnoch was named for St. Winnoc to whom the early church here was dedicated. Although Castle Semple no longer exists, visitors should take time to visit the Collegiate Church, which dates back to the early 1500's and has been remarkably well preserved.

Lochwinnoch was mainly an agricultural town, but the Industrial Revolution brought mills, such as linen, cotton and thread mills to the town in the late 1700's. However, even though the textile mills of Lochwinnoch are a thing of the past, this village is still growing and prospering. Many of the people who live here commute daily to work in Glasgow and the village retains its unique small town charm.

The loch makes Lochwinnoch an important destination for those that love watersports. Whether you want to simply have a swim or you enjoy diving or sailing, there is something here for you. This area is also the site of the largest RPSB bird sanctuaries in Scotland. This venue is suitable for visitors of all ages. The tour of the wetlands begins at the Visitor's Centre with its viewing tower complete with telescopes. However, the feeding stations right in front of the windows will give you a close up view of the many birds that nest here. There are also interactive displays and a number of events that run throughout the year. Don't forget to pick up a souvenir of your visit at the gift store.

Visitors to Lochwinnoch can also take advantage of sailing excursions around the coast and to the islands offshore. Plan a fishing expedition where you can enjoy fishing under the supervision of experienced guides or take in one of the many rowing regattas that take place here each year. There are more than 30 golf courses within easy driving distance if golfing is your passion. This location is the ideal choice if you want to have a based from which you can explore the country of Robert Burns. The accommodations are first–class, with a choice of bed and breakfasts and country inns. Everything here is geared towards your comfort and pleasure.
