Crovie was originally settled by families driven out of their inland crofts and is simply a line of houses perched on a beach. They came here originally to fish using the boats of the landlord, but eventually they built their own boats and established their own fishing industry until 1953.
It is surrounded by high cliffs and makes the ideal setting for anyone wanting to explore the neighbouring towns and villages. From Crovie, you can look across Gamrie Bay to the village of Gardenstown. You cannot bring your car into the village, as it is the only one in Britain where it is not possible to drive through the village. There is one road and that is mainly a footpath in front of the houses.
When you visit Crovie, you have to park your car on the top of the cliffs, from which you have a stunning view. Looking down on the village gives visitors the feeling that they are in a fairytale land with the sight of the row of houses facing the sea. It is a bit of a hike down to the village and back up again, but there are steps and a path for visitors to use.
Today Crovie is mainly a tourist location with many of the homes being rented as self–catering accommodations. In summer, these houses are rented almost all the time. There is a path that leads to Gardenstown and is a delightful walk. You can get to see some of the wildlife of the area and the plants and flowers growing wild on the top of the cliffs. It is also the nesting ground from many species of birds.
Visitors who stay in Crovie are treated to the sounds of the water lapping the shore and the cries of the seagulls overhead. Some of the nearby attractions that you can visit include the Banff Museum and Delgatie Castle. There are also several golf courses in the area where you can tee off amidst some of the most spectacular scenery.
Retire to your cottage in Crovie for the night for a peaceful vacation where you won't hear the sounds of city traffic. The sunsets and sunrises are fascinating sights. Walk along the beach and toss a few stones into the sea or just sit and watch the beauty of nature.
