Located on the East bank of the River Deveron and is about 20 miles from the town of Fraserburgh. It is actually called Banff and Macduff because the two towns are considered twin burghs. It was mainly a fishing village called Doune until the 2
nd Earl of Fife built a family home here and gave the village his family name. During the 19
th century, this was a popular spa resort town even though it never lost its fishing roots. Even today the harbour is a busy place with the many fishing vessels that use it.
From the park overlooking the harbour you can see the fishermen at work and the fishing nets and lobster pots that they use. Doune Church, which dates back to 1805, stands on a hill above the town and nearby is the granite war memorial, built in 1920, which has a unique octagon shape. Visit the Macduff Marine Aquarium, which is the deepest aquarium in Britain. This is a visit that every member of the family will enjoy as it includes just about every kind of sea life found in the Moray Firth.
While in MacDuff, you can visit the town of Banff and the beautiful gardens at nearby Gardenstown. Visit the Delgate Castle with its turnpike stairs of 97 steps and browse the selection of artwork and exhibits at Duff House. The grounds are spectacular and are open all year round. Enjoy the selection of souvenirs and knitwear that you will find in the stores and of course the accommodations leave nothing to chance. You will certainly be comfortable whether you choose a quaint bed and breakfast, a self-catering cottage or a hotel.
