Rothes Travel Guide - Scotland

Rothes is a village located in Moray on the banks of River Spey. It is only 10 miles from Elgin and 11 miles from Keith, both of which have railway stations if you want to travel here by train. This ancient burgh is home to no less than five whisky distilleries. Whether you want to enjoy some fantastic fishing, hillwalking or just strolling through the natural beauty with your camera snapping pictures, there is something in this part of Scotland to suit every taste and interest.

Rothes is famous for its many species of fish. While most of the fishing areas are designated as fly–fishing only, there are some areas where you can use bait to catch your fish. The area is also noted for its salmon fishery. The lochs are stocked on a regular basis and if you don't have your fishing equipment with you, there is plenty of equipment for you to rent. The fishing season is closed during the winter months, so if you are an avid fisherman, this may have an impact on when you choose to visit.

Golf is also an important activity for visitors to Rothes. The attractive Rothes Golf Club is a 9–hole course with tree–lined parkways that offer splendid views of the Spey Valley and the community itself. No matter what your golfing skill, you will find challenges when you tee off on this course.

Cycling and walking are favourite pastimes for both visitors and the local population. You can take a hike in the hills and if you really enjoy a challenge, Ben Aigan Hill will offer you the opportunity for mountain climbing that you have been looking for. History lovers will surely visit the ruins of Rothes Castle at the south end of the village. This castle dates back to the 13th century and was associated with the Earl of Rothes. All that remains of this castle is the curtain wall. The villagers destroyed it in 1662 because it had become a haven for thieves and cattle rustlers.

Start your exploration of the Whisky Trail in Rothes. Glen Grant is the best known of all the distilleries because it has a visitor's centre. However, you won't have very much difficulty finding all the distilleries and if you ask the management, you may just get a tour of the facilities.

Rothes has a variety of accommodations for you to choose from. You will find that the 1200 or so people that live in this village are extremely friendly and will go out of their way to make you feel right at home. If this is your first visit to Rothes, it certainly won't be your last.
