Lochinver Travel Guide - Scotland

A busy coastal town in the northern Highlands, it is possible to see grey seals and the Isle of Lewis from Lochinver. The mountains on the back of the town give the impression that it is an island itself. People have inhabited this area for thousands of years and evidence of this is still visible in the caves in the hills. This part of Scotland is considered to be a geologist's paradise with some of the oldest rock formations and geology in the world. Sulivan is the highest mountain and looks like a policeman's helmet.

The hills around the town provide excellent opportunities for climbing. The heart of the town is the main street, where you will find several small shops, restaurants and pubs. The Culag Hotel is one of the largest buildings in town and was built in 1873 as a shooting lodge. At the end of this building you can visit the Royal National Museum to Deep Sea Fishermen.

Lochinver with Suilven Mountain Visit Highland Stoneware to see or purchase the high-fired, hand-painted ceramic pottery, which is known all over the world. You can actually see how the stoneware is made and decorated. Glencanisp Lodge is an impressive holiday home that you have to see if you are not staying here. It is at the beginning of the long route to Sulivan, so you can't miss it.

At the harbour of Lochinver, you will probably see ships from all over the world. This is a very busy fishing port with catches of different species of fish being landed every day. A walk along the stone bridge, built in 1821, will take you along the back portion of the village to the Free Church. This is the best location for a panoramic view of the village.
