Balmoral Castle: This turreted castle was built in 1628 by the Earl of Mar. It was burned by John Farquharson of Inveraray (the Black Colonel) in 1689 and was rebuilt by Government troops in 1745 following the crush of the Jacobite uprising and garrisoned by Hanoverian troops. The castle was bought by the Farquharsons of Invercauld in 1732 and transformed into a private residence. This impressive building has a central tower with spiral staircase with barrel vaulted ceilings and a huge Iron Gate. There is also an underground prison and a star shaped defensive surrounding wall.
There are guided tours, explanatory information, and a gift shop and picnic areas.
