Auchterarder is the destination of many avid golfers on holiday because of the championship golf course at Gleneagles. The town is set amid gently rolling hills and the length of the main street running through the town has given it the nickname of "Lang Toon". The history of this town goes back many centuries. It was the hunting lodge of Malcolm III in the 11
th century and it played host to Edward I in 1296 during his invasion of Scotland. In 1328, Robert the Bruce gave the town to the Montifex family who later passed it on to the Drummonds as part of a dowry.
Many historical events took place in Auchterarder. It was the site of the negotiations of the Treaty of Perth in 1559, the first state recognition of Protestantism and the beginnings of the Disruption in the Protestant church in 1834.
The completion of the King's and Queen's Golf Courses at Gleneagles was really what put this town on the map and was described as the eighth wonder of the world. A 9–hole course, called the Wee Course was later added. A third course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, now adds to the excitement of golfing in Auchterarder and if this is not enough golf, there are 20 more courses within a 20 mile radius.
While in Auchterarder, take time out from golfing to stroll the streets of the town and drop into one of the pubs. The friendly people are always willing to chat and you will make friends that will keep you coming back time and again.
