Facing the foothills of the Grampian Mountains in Perthshire, the village of Blairgowrie and the connecting village of Rattray make the perfect base from which you can explore Perthshire, Scotland. The twin burghs are located in the Strathmore Valley and lie on opposite sides of the River Ericht – Blairgowrie is on the west bank and Rattray is on the east. It is the market town for the surrounding areas as well as a popular tourist destination, especially for skiers. The area dates back to the 11
th century and today is a very popular location for fresh fruits, such as raspberries and strawberries.
Take the guided walk along the Farm Trail where you will see many different species of animals, such as Highland cattle, red deer, sheep and goats. The MacBeth experience is one you don't want to miss in nearby Bankfoot, which will help you understand some of the history of this region.
Visit the scene of the daring escape of Donald Cargill, one of the leaders of the Covenanters. There is a viewing platform from which you can marvel at the daring feats and read about his life on the plaques at the site. Take part in picking the fruit in the fields during July and August ' an event that regularly draws students from all over Europe.
See the mansion that now stands on the site where Waverly Castle once stood and learn of its history with the Earl of Athole taking over the seat of the Clan Rattray. The valley of Lornty was once the site of disputing clans, who built the castle of Drumlochy. Here you will learn about the battles fought for the area until the area passed into the hands of Clan MacPherson.
There are some very old gravestones in the Kirkyard, with some dating back to the late 1600's. There is also an important sculptured gravestone here showing Abraham preparing to sacrifice Isaac, which is believed to also date back to the same period.
Blairgowrie is the perfect location if you enjoy hillwalking for just walking in general. The scenic landscape just begs you to be out and about. There are many trails and walking paths that will take you past farms and cottages, into the woodlands or across the moorland. For a commanding view of the area, climb the peak of Cairnwell, or take the chair lift to the top if you are so inclined.
