Pitlochry Travel Guide - Scotland

Set amidst some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of Europe, Pitlochry is a small Victorian town located on the River Tummel, just a few miles away from Dunkeld and only 45 minutes drive from Perth. The history of this town goes back to 208, when Roman forces built forts at each end of the valley. Queen Victoria visited here in the 1860's and ever since that time it is a popular resort town. The town was originally three smaller hamlets and all that remains of those earlier times are two small cottages you see on the way to the Golf Course.

No matter where your interests lie, Pitlochry has something to make every vacation a memorable one. For fishermen and women, the variety of salmon and trout at the Pitlochry Angling Club will net you a large catch. If golfing is high on your list of things to do, then you are in luck here as well, with the Pitlochry Golf Course. This 18–hole course has a few steep holes at the beginning of the course to test your skills, but it does get easier as you continue along. The spectacular scenery will go a long way toward alleviating your frustration if you get a low score.

Pitlochry One of the most popular attractions is the fish ladder at the Pitlochry Dam. Here you will see salmon making their way up the ladder to reach the spawning grounds in Loch Faskally, a man–made loch. Enjoy drama and entertainment in the hills when you attend a production at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre and afterwards you can dine at one of the many restaurants along Atholl Road. This street is also home to many specialty gift stores where you will surely find a unique souvenir or gift to take back home with you.

Even if you do not like walking, the scenery of Pitlochry will entrance you and draw you outdoors. The various walks you can take range from 3 to almost 12 miles, but you can choose to walk the roads, through the wooded areas, or along the lowland or uplands. You will be surprised to find how easy it is to walk without tiring of your surroundings.

Visit the nearby conservation village of Moulin with its 1400–year–old church, the Dunfallandy Stone and the Pass of Killiecrankie. Take a guided tour of Blair Atholl or just enjoy the range of activities designed to suit every member of the family. The Atholl Country Collection is an interesting collection of artefacts telling about Highland life and Blair Castle with its 32 rooms is open to the public. This area is worth a full day alone to get to see and enjoy everything there, especially if you want to take a relaxing stroll to the Falls of Bruar.
