The 14th century Hermitage Castle, situated nearby, was the seat of the Earl of Bothwell, third husband of Mary Queen of Scots. Newcastleton is within easy reach of Kielder Forest (with its "Reiver's Cycling Route") and Kielder Water ' Europe's largest man-made lake.
