Newcastleton Travel Guide - Scotland

The Duke of Buccleuch founded the new village of Newcastleton in 1793. The area was very much Border Reiver country and part of the Scottish Borders known as the Debatable Land. The Liddesdale Heritage Centre and Armstrong Clan Trust reflect and continue to promote great interest in the area's past. The 14^th century Hermitage Castle, situated nearby, was the seat of the Earl of Bothwell, third husband of Mary Queen of Scots. Newcastleton is within easy reach of Kielder Forest (with its "Reiver's Cycling Route") and Kielder Water ' Europe's largest man-made lake.

Music Festival of International reputation is held in July each year, Craft Fair in May, Liddesdale Agricultural Show in August and Sheep-Dog Trials in the autumn.
