Brechin, a town in Angus and Dundee, has a long history for visitors to explore. It is located on the banks of the South Esk River and retains the traditional charm of a Scottish burgh. The history of the town dates back about 2000 years when the Picts inhabited the area. The Round Tower is about 1000 years old and is only one of two in all of Scotland that are still is existence. This was a Pictish stronghold as a defence against the Roman invaders. Visit the Cathedral, located next to the tower, which dates back to medieval times and is famous for its stained glass windows. You can also visit the remains of an almshouse, Maisondieu, which was built about the same time as the Cathedral. Take a tour of the Caledonian Railway, where there are local steam days. The Mechanics Institute of Brechin was a gift to the town by the Dalhousie Family and was built in 1838.
The Brechin Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Scotland and up until the 1780’s it was the only bridge across the South Esk River. Records mention a bridge in this area in 1220, but the present bridge does not date back that far. Take a walk on the Heritage Trail and see some of the old buildings of the town that will take you back to earlier times. For a day of fun, spend some time at the Leisure Centre, which is a multi-sports facility and a general public area where you can watch some of the proceedings. Just north of Brechin, you will find the Caterthuns, which are Iron Age forts. The White Caterthuns looks like a volcano and has circular ramparts on the top, while the Brown Caterthuns was built from earth. Visit nearby villages, such as Edzell, which has won many awards for its sheer beauty. Other tourist destinations in this area include Glen Esk, Tarfside, Fettercairn and Edzell Castle. The village of Trinity is the location of the golf club if you want to tee off and you can also play squash at this location.
Brechin is the perfect location for walking. The spectacular beauty of the area will enthral you at every turn. There are many routes for you to take around the town and into the countryside. Along the way you will see quarries and market sites, amidst the nature trails that will show you some of the wildlife and plant life of the area. There is a wealth of accommodations where you will be quite comfortable and of course the mouth-watering meals at the restaurants will certainly please you. You will want to come back to Brechin time after time to experience the beauties of nature and the friendliness of the people.
