Carnoustie Travel Guide

Home > Angus & Dundee > Carnoustie

Carnoustie Beach Located at the mouth of the Barry Burn in the Angus and Dundee region of Scotland, Carnoustie is a town of about 10,000 people. This area has a long association with golf with golf being played here in 1527, even before the course was established at St. Andrews. It is the youngest of the Royal Burghs and has a sweeping bay of sand that really catches the eye of all visitors. The townspeople own this town, but the Angus District Council takes care of the administration. In 1890, the Earl of Dalhousie sold the land to the people, so that they could enjoy the recreation opportunities for all time.

The Carnoustie Golf Course has been the site of the Open Championship since 1931 and will play host to this golf tournament again in 2007. Even if you come for the exceptional golf, you can still take time out to explore the many attractions for visitors that this area holds. Visit Arbroath Abbey, in the neighbouring town of Arbroath, and the round tower and Cathedral in Brechin – only one of two still remaining in Scotland. Some of the castles that you can explore within a short driving distance from Carnoustie include Edzell Castle and Glamis Castle.

Just two miles north of Carnoustie, you can see the Ardestie and Carlungie earth houses. These are fine examples of the kind of dwelling used by the people that inhabited this land in the first century. The Caterthuns are remains of Iron Age hill forts and are strong evidence that this region has been home to people for thousands of years.

Take a walk around Crombie Country Park located about 5 miles from Carnoustie. This park has wildlife trails, a display related to the wildlife of the area and a ranger service to protect the 250 acres of woodland. There are guided walks available as well as picnic and barbeque facilities. Relax and drink in the scenery, while the children play in the play area provided for them.

You will find many different types of accommodation available in Carnoustie depending on your taste and budget. The self-catering cottages are in very scenic and secluded areas so you can be alone on your vacation if you wish. The restaurants serve a variety of meals catering to all tastes, so there will definitely be something on the menu that you like. Drop into the pub, where you will treated like a long-lost friend and when you leave you will have new friends. If you forget to bring your golf clubs with you when you come to Carnoustie, there are many retail businesses catering to this tourist industry. You can rent clubs for a day or longer so that you can tee off on the course.
