Callander is located in central Scotland, just on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. It is only an hour’s drive from the major cities of Stirling, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth. This has been an important place in the History of Scotland right back to prehistoric times. A Neolithic site at the Claish farm dates back to 4000 B.C. and the largest chambered cairn in Scotland is located at Auchenlaich Farm. Every period in history has had an effect on Callander in some way – the Romans, the Vikings, the Jacobites. In 1763, a Soldier’s Settlement was established at the end of the Seven Year’s War and families from the Highland Glen moved to the area. Businesses developed and tourism began here as early as the mid-1800’s.
