Crianlarich Travel Guide

Home > Argyll > Crianlarich

Temporary photograph of a Scottish Thistle till we obtain a picture of Crianlarich The town of Crianlarich is at the junction of all major roads from all directions. The train station here is also a central part of the rail transportation in Scotland. The history of Crianlarich dates back to the 7th century when St. Fillan established a monastery here. Legend has it that the saint is actually buried under the foundation of St. Fillan’s Priory, the ruins of which can still be seen at Kirkton. It was just 8 km. north of the town that the MacDougall clan defeated Robert the Bruce in 1306 – the same time that he lost his treasured brooch, which is rumoured to be in the possession of the MacDougalls.

Visit the ruins of Loch Dochart Castle, just a short distance from Crianlarich, which was destroyed by the McNabs in 1646. From the tearoom of the station, you have an outstanding view of the mountains surrounding the town. This is one of the most scenic towns in Scotland and is in close proximity to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. This is one of the best places in the country for bird watching and attracts naturalists from all over the world. Here you have something for everyone – walking, hiking, cycling, sailing and even canoeing.

There are no nightclubs in Crianlarich, but like all Scottish towns, there are two pubs where you can enjoy an ale or a drink of whisky while getting to know the local people. There are also many ceilidhs for you to enjoy as the people of Crianlarich do love singing and dancing and don’t need much of an opportunity to have a party. Visitors can stroll along the riverbank and take in the spectacular scenery. If you like more strenuous walking and hiking, you can test your skills against the mountains of Ben More and Stob Binnien from which you will have a magnificent view of the countryside below.

Avid fishermen love to visit Crianlarich because they can cast off from the banks of the River Fillan. This is an excellent location for fishing for brown trout and if you like playing golf, the world famous Loch Lomond Golf Course is not far away and there are several more within a 45 minute drive. Visit the Falls of Falloch where the River Falloch pours into Loch Lomond.

There are many different types of accommodations for you to choose from when you come to Crianlarich. Rent a room in one of the guesthouses where you have wonderful gardens to explore and places to sit in the evenings. Stay at the hotel in the town where you can stroll through the streets and pop into the small stores. If you are touring Scotland with your RV, then there are sites where you can park for a day, a week or even longer. If you are walking your way across Scotland, then the small town of Crianlarich is the halfway point on the West Highland Way and a wonderful place to enjoy a few days of rest and relaxation.
