The town of Crianlarich is at the junction of all major roads from all directions. The train station here is also a central part of the rail transportation in Scotland. The history of Crianlarich dates back to the 7th century when St. Fillan established a monastery here. Legend has it that the saint is actually buried under the foundation of St. Fillan’s Priory, the ruins of which can still be seen at Kirkton. It was just 8 km. north of the town that the MacDougall clan defeated Robert the Bruce in 1306 – the same time that he lost his treasured brooch, which is rumoured to be in the possession of the MacDougalls. Visit the ruins of Loch Dochart Castle, just a short distance from Crianlarich, which was destroyed by the McNabs in 1646. From the tearoom of the station, you have an outstanding view of the mountains surrounding the town. This is one of the most scenic towns in Scotland and is in close proximity to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. This is one of the best places in the country for bird watching and attracts naturalists from all over the world. Here you have something for everyone – walking, hiking, cycling, sailing and even canoeing.
