Dunoon, on the Cowal peninsula, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Scotland. There is easy access to the town with ferry services that run on a regular schedule from Gourock. Even as early as 1800, Dunoon was a popular seaside resort when it was only a village. Today it is a major resort on the River Clyde that sees visitors all through the year. There is plenty to see and do when you visit Dunoon, probably too much to fit into one visit. See the statue of Bonny Mary O’Argyll, the love of Robert Burns and the ruins of Dunoon Castle. Visit the Dunoon Grammar School, which is almost 400 years old and sit in the same seat as many famous people, such as George Robertson, who attended school here.
See the magnificent blooming plants at the Benmore Garden, a mountainside garden. Walkers will want to take in the Cowal Waking Arts and Festival held during October, with over 70 guided walls and the opportunity to browse art galleries and take in concerts. The Cowal Bird Garden is not to be missed and even if you don’t like walking you do need to take a stroll along the Ardnadam Heritage Trail. Take a tour of Dunoon Ceramics and see how the beautiful pieces of pottery are made. See the wide range of artwork on display at the Juro Design Gallery. This venue is the site of many revolving exhibits including textiles, jewellery, ceramics and more. Rent a quad and take a day for off-road riding and go exploring on your own or enjoy a trip through the backcountry on a Highland horse. Fishing enthusiasts are not left out with spectacular brown trout fishing and of course, you can’t visit Dunoon without spending a day on the golf course.
