Located in the Argyll and Bute area of Scotland, Furnace is situated on the shores of Loch Fyne. It is only about 9 miles from Inveraray. During the 18th and 19th centuries, there was an iron smelting industry here operated by the Duddon Ironworks Furnace Company of Furness in Cumbria. This helps to explain how this community got its name. The site was originally called Craleckan. There was also a quarry near to Furnace from which the porphyrite stone was used to make paving or setts. The economy of Furnace is now based on tourism, forestry and fishing, although there is still some quarrying done on a small scale. The local pub is the centre of the village and there are a variety of types of accommodations available for tourists to avail of. The playground and the football area offer fantastic views of Loch Fyne.
