Mull of Kintyre Travel Guide

Temporary photograph of a Scottish Thistle till we obtain a picture of Mull of Kintyre Mull of Kintyre is a peninsula on the southwestern tip of the Argyll peninsula of Scotland. It is long and narrow, with mountainous regions in the centre and fertile farmlands along the coast. Its history dates back to the Vikings that once lived here. The main town is Campbeltown, which does have a farming and fishing economy, but the main industry is the distilling of whisky. This is the home of some of the best whisky in the world, especially the award winning "Springbank".

Paul McCartney has a home quite close to Campbeltown and one of his songs; "Mull of Kintyre" has made this tiny part of the world very well known.

The wide range of wildlife you will find here is astounding. Probably due to the isolation of the area, many species of animals roam freely here and during one short trip nature lovers can expect to see almost as many animals living in their natural habitat as they would find in a zoo. This area is a paradise for walkers, no matter what skill level you have. You can walk along the beach or stroll through the pristine forests, but the more adventurous can indulge in a strenuous climb on the cliffs and along the rocky shores.

Rent a bicycle in Campbeltown, or bring your own with you. The cycling route from Campbeltown to Cranaig is a SUSTRANS route, but there are also many smaller trails where you can enjoy the peace and quiet and the panoramic scenery. Golfing is at its finest in Kintyre, with two 18-hole courses and three 9-hole courses for you to choose from. You might want to extend your holiday to play them all.

Visit the exquisite gardens at the Stonefield Castle Hotel in Tarbert and the Achamore Gardens on the Island of Gigha to have an idea of why Argyll is known for its spectacular gardens. Horseback riding, sailing and surfing are more of the activities you can enjoy in Kintyre.

There are a wide variety of restaurants and pubs where you can have good food, good conversation and of course a taste of the famous whisky.
