Lochearnhead Travel Guide

Home > Argyll > Lochearnhead

Temporary photograph of a Scottish Thistle till we obtain a picture of Lochearnhead Even though the railway no longer runs through this village, Lochearnhead is a very popular tourist destination. The remains of the railway make a very nice walking trail. It is located in a picturesque location at the foot of Glen Ogle along the western edge of Loch Earn. Lochearnhead today does not reflect its turbulent history in its ambiance of peace and serenity. It has been the scene of bloody battles between the various Scottish clans.

Lochearnhead is the favourite vacation destination for those who like leisurely activities. Loch Earn offers the opportunity for many types of water sports, such as fishing, water-skiing, boating, sailing and canoeing. Scuba diving is also very popular with those who want to explore all of Scotland, what’s on the land and what’s under the waters. Loch Earn rarely freezes over in winter. In fact, the only record of that ever happening was during the winter of 1894/5, when the residents of Lochearnhead took advantage of the ice to have a huge curling bonspiel.

Visit Edinample Castle in Lochearnhead, which was built in 1630 by Sir Colin Campbell (also known as Black Duncan) of Glenorchy. As you tour the castle listen to the tales of doom and gloom associated with it and the area. Legend has it that St. Blane placed a curse on this land saying that anyone owning the land would never prosper. Another legend says that the stones used to build the castle came from a graveyard. Black Duncan is said to have pushed the builder off the roof when he forgot to include a parapet so he could walk around it and the ghost of the builder is said to haunt the castle.

Ardvorlich House has been the home of the Stewarts since 1580 and the entrance to this house, which is now a bed and breakfast, has a tombstone that marks the sport where seven men from Glen Coe were killed trying to raid this house in 1620.

There are many opportunities to get out and about when you are in Lochearnhead. Whether you want to walk through the streets of the village and stop for chat with the locals or be alone with your thought, you can certainly do so. This part of Scotland is a walker’s paradise. You can take an energetic or a leisurely stroll in the foothills or take a guided walking tour. There are eight golf courses with an hour’s drive from Lochearnhead, which makes it the perfect place to choose as your base for exploring the area.

Explore the delightful shops that you will find in Lochearnhead. Drop into the quilting shop to see the exquisite designs of the homemade quilts. You will surely fall in love with several of them and have to make room in your luggage to get them home. When you stay in this area, you can choose from a bed and breakfast or a hotel and if you drive here in your RV, you can park it in the caravan area.
