Tarbet Travel Guide

The Country Side near Tarbet Tarbet is one of the villages around Loch Lomond that Queen Victoria referred to as a "small town with splendid mountains and woodlands". Tarbet is the terminus of the ferry to Handa Island, but this is only one of many reasons why tourists come to this village. When you visit Tarbet today you will see those same picturesque images and realize what it is that draws tourists to this place. Here you will find some of the most scenic mountain peaks in Scotland, which provides you with ample opportunity for hill walking. In fact these mountain peaks are often called the "Arrochar Alps".

Another favorite way of getting to see Tarbet and the countryside is by cycling. It is also a stop on the West Highland Line, so you can easily make this your base and use the train as your method of transportation to all the towns and villages.

Since Tarbet has a large pier it is the destination of many yachts. Sailing is also a popular tourist activity as you sail the beautiful Loch Lomond. This pier is also the boarding point of one of the largest cruise ships in the country – the Waverly. You can hire a boat ride to see the basking seals. When strolling the countryside, you will see a lot of grazing cattle and there are several "Beware the Bull" signs. Here as in other parts of Scotland, you do have to adhere to the country code of closing all gates behind you.

Tarbet is at the crossing point of two major routes in Scotland – the A82 and A83. One of the filming locations for Scotland – The Movie was actually located along the A-82 in Tarbet. Tarbet has restaurants, the Tarbet Hotel and a beautiful picnic park where you can rest and enjoy the sights and sounds.

Stay at the Tarbet House located in the National Park from which you have a spectacular view of Loch Lomond and Ben Lomond. The Tarbet Hotel in the center of the town is an imposing structure and you can’t miss it. This location carries a lot of history in its walls having played host to such famous people as Queen Victoria herself.
