Originally founded as a seaside resort in 1805, Ardrossan has deep waters making it ideal for steamboats to connect it to Belfast and locations in Scotland such as the Isle of Man and Arran. Although Ardrossan hoped to become a terminus on the Glasgow, Paisley and Ardrossan Canal, it did succeed in becoming an important poet for the export of coal and the centre for industries connected with shipbuilding, oil refining and the railway. With three railway stations and ferry links to Arran and the Isle of Man, visitors do not have any difficulty making travel arrangements to come here.
The history of this town can be traced back to the building of the castle in 1140, which has passed through many owners down through the centuries, eventually being destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in 1648. Most of the stonework was transported to Ayr for the building of the fort. The ruins of this castle are still visible, but are very overgrown. The highlight of a June trip to Ardrossan is the Highland Games. This event is held annually on the second Sunday in June. Each year brings different events to the delight of tourists.
Take a walking tour of the town to see many historical buildings, such as the Verona Fathers House, the War Memorial, the site of the former Bath Villa, and Battery Point and the Inches where Army volunteers practiced their shooting in the 1800’s. The refreshing air and the scenic beauty will have to returning to Ardrossan time and time again.
