Gourock Travel Guide

Gourock Gourock, a small burgh in Inverclyde, has always had roots in tourism. Once a popular seaside resort, this small town is now mainly a residential area. It began as a fishing village that was considered to be the seat of the Darroch clan and this family has influenced the town down through the centuries. This family made its money in the West Indies and built Gourock House here. The house was given to the town as Darroch Park, but now bears the name of Gourock Park.

Visitors to Gourock have no trouble with transportation. A ferry service to Dunoon and Kilcreggan operates on the River Clyde on a regular basis for passengers and vehicles. There is also an electric train service connecting the town to Glasgow.

Ferry crossing from Gourock to Dunoon The Granny Kempock stone is very popular with tourists and locals alike. This stone is reputed to date from prehistoric times and is so named because of its resemblance to an old woman wearing a hooded cape. There are many legends associated with this stone, such as giving sailors good luck and blessing a happy marriage. In order to receive these tokens of good fortune, you have to circle the stone three times.

For a scenic view of Gurrock and the surrounding countryside, climb to the top of Tower Hill. This tower is steeped in history as a place of rest and relaxation for General Darroch in 1847. It was also used during the Second World War to issue warnings to the wartime vessels by erecting a mast when bad weather was expected. Today this is a tourist attraction, not only because of its history, but because of the scenic walking trails and swing park.

Gourock Open Air Pool on Albert Road In good weather, the pool at Gourock on Albert Road is an excellent location to have a cool dip. This is one of the oldest outdoor pools in the country complete with a baby pool, a sunbathing deck, where you can soak up the rays and work on your tan. You can take advantage of the Pulse gym whenever you visit because it is open all year long.

The Cloch Caravan Park is a great place to pitch your tent or park your RV. Take advantage of the refreshing vacation that only a small town, such as Gurrock, can provide.
