Maybole Travel Guide

Located in the heart of the homeland of Robert Burns, Maybole may be small in size but it’s large in history. The first inhabitants of the area were the crannog dwellers that lived about two miles away from the present site of the town. At the time of the Romans, Druids that practiced the Damii religion inhabited the land and there are many signs of their existence still visible in Maybole.

Since the fifth century, the town has been associated with religion. The Crossraguel Abbey was occupied by monks until 1592 and was one of the few places in Scotland where the monks actually minted their own coins. The Collegiate Chapel, built in 1371 became the first Collegium in the country. It had a Provost, three Prebendaries and daily church services were held in the Cathedral. Both of these historic buildings have been preserved and tourists, especially history buffs, flock there to imagine themselves transported back in time. The graves of the Kings of Carrisk can be seen under the High Altar of the Cathedral.

Turnberry Castle is the site where Robert the Bruce took the first step towards independence for Scotland and the birthplace of Robert Burns is located at Alloway and Robert Burns National Heritage Park, about 5 miles north of Maybole. There are many fortified castles displaying the true Scottish baronial style scattered around Maybole. Some of these, such as Cassilis, Kilhenzie and Maybole Castle are homes where people still live, but all that is left of many others is the ruins. Visit John Knox Street to see the stone tablet marking the site of the great debate between Knox and the Abbot of Crossraquel in 1562.

Today, Maybole retains its country charm even though there are many modern buildings. It is a place of rest and relaxation where you can stroll the streets and talk to the friendly people. If you are looking for outdoor activities on your visit here, Maybole has plenty to keep you occupied. Tee off at the Maybole Golf Course, which is a 9-hole public golf course. Memorial Park has public tennis courts and a bowling green.

At Miller Park, the children will enjoy the playground and a football pitch. If you just want to relax and take in the scenery, the Town Green has benches where you can sit in the shade of the trees and watch the world go by. Fishing enthusiasts will delight in the many lochs and streams where they can spend a relaxing day trying to catch the elusive "big one" and the Carnegie Library has a room where you can play billiards or snooker.

There are countless trails where you can get in your exercise and soak up the panoramic views all around you. Easy to reach and easy on the eyes, you will return from Maybole ready to return to work, but also making plans to return.
