Millport is the largest town in the island of Cumbrae. It is easily accessed by ferry from Largs and a short bus ride into town. This ferry leaves from Largs every fifteen minutes during the summer months and every hour during the winter. The island became part of Scotland after Alexander III defeated the Norse king in the Battle of Largs in 1263. It was later divided into several small baronies with the same names as they bear today. Even though the Earl of Glasgow did own part of the island, by 1900, it was all part of the feudal land owned by the Marquis of Bute. This continues until 1999, when the present Marquis, Johnny Bute, began to sell the land to the tenants.
During its rich history, Millport has seen its share of smugglers. In fact the first boat built here was done so with this purpose in mind. Church services even had to be cancelled because not enough wine has been smuggled ashore for Communion. The short ferry ride means that visitors can come to Millport for a day’s excursion or they might like to stay for a longer period of time. There are two hotels in town – the Royal George Hotel and the Millerston Hotel. However, you can also choose to stay in an efficiency unit where you cook for yourself or at one of the four guesthouses in town. This small island is only 10 miles in circumference and there are plenty of things to see and so. Sailing, cycling, bowling and golf are just some of the activities you can indulge yourself in during your visit. The peace and tranquility lends itself to walks along the beach or through the town. There is no rush here so you can take time to drink in the sights and sounds. Enjoy a game of miniature golf along the seafront if you would like to do something different on your vacation. Rent a bicycle and enjoy a fascinating ride around the island.
The Cathedral of the Isles is the smallest cathedral in Europe, with seating for only about 100 people. The walkway is lined with trees and in spite of its small interior, it does look rather large from the outside. This is because the cathedral is raised above the ground and the impressive height of the spire adds to the illusion. The port became an important seaport during the 20th century and is still an important port of call for the Waverly, the last sea-going paddleboat steamer in the world. Millport is the site of the Marine Biology Research of the University of Glasgow as well as that of many volcanic outcroppings of rock, such as the Lion’s Rock. Here you will find a museum and an aquarium with all kinds of sea life. The downtown area of Millport boasts restaurants offering cuisine from many parts of the world and quaint stores where you can purchase a unique souvenir of your visit here.
