As one of the most sheltered harbours on the west coast of Scotland, Troon is easily reached by the fast catamarans that travel between Ireland to Stranraer and Troon. It is also less than 10 minutes drive from the airport in Prestwick. This town is very famous for golf because of the Royal Troon Golf Club, the venue of the 133rd Open Championship in 2004. This is only one of six golf courses in the area, two of which are championship greens.
The name of the town comes from the Old Celtic word "Trwyn" meaning headland. Although the harbour sheltered by this headland was well known to sailors for many centuries, it was not until 1808 that it gained fame through the efforts of the fourth Duke of Portland. He built docks and added an artificial ballast bank with the result that by the late 1800’s, Troon was one of the top ten ports for unloading coal. Shipbuilding also became an important industry here even up until the 1960's. Although it is the Troon Golf Course that draws many tourists here, there is more than golf to do here. Activities abound, such as jogging and running at the Troon Tortoises Athletic Club, swimming at the BodySense Club, and sailing for beginners or professionals at the Troon Sailing Club or Second Wind Sailing.
When in Troon, accommodations are not hard to find. With the plethora of bed and breakfast establishments, hotels and cottages, you can relax in comfortable surroundings.
