Jedburgh Travel Guide

Jedburgh is situated 10 miles North of the Border with England is a historic Royal Burgh. Jedburgh Abbey, (on the banks of Jed Water and built on the site of a 9^th century chapel) was founded by King David I in 1138 and King Alexander III was married in this Abbey which was destroyed and rebuilt many times during Border warfare. Not far from the Abbey are the Castle, Jailhouse and Mary Queen of Scots House where she stayed in 1566 and which displays an exhibition of her tragic life. Bonnie Prince Charlie was proclaimed 'King' from the town's Mercat Cross during his army trek South to England.

Activities/Facilities: Visitor Centre, 9-hole golf course, golfing range, pony-trekking, swimming pool and fitness centre. There are two beautiful parks, trout fishing on the River Teviot and Jed Water, and the Jedburgh Border Games takes place in July.

Fernihirst Castle (Scotland's frontier fortress) lies on the outskirts of Jedburgh - the grounds and Ker Information Centre are open to visitors on a limited basis. To the South of the town are the award-winning Jedforest Deer and Farm Park. To the North, near Ancrum is Monteviot House Gardens, on the banks of the River Teviot and Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre. Dere Street, built Northwards from York by the Romans 2000 years ago is situated about 2 miles East of the town.
