Glasgow & The Clyde Map A whole range of fascinating visitor attractions here includes New Lanark, where the River Clyde flows through a wooded, rocky gorge. The river powered textile mills. Industrialist Robert Owen controlled this development. The New Lanark Visitor Centre tells the story of the doctrine of "Owenism", with its Utopian ideas of workers' welfare, which later became world famous. The Royal Burgh of Lanark was the site of Scotland's first parliament in 978.
William Wallace is thought to have formed his first army of resistance here.
There's a wealth of award-winning museums in the handsome town of Biggar and Chatelherault near Hamilton is well worth a visit too.

The former hunting lodge of the Dukes of Hamilton has been restored and now houses a fascinating visitor centre. The famous Scottish architect William Adam built it in 1732. Standing in the grounds of the Carfin Grotto is the Carfin Pilgrimage Centre, which traces the history, traditions and motivations of pilgrimage but focuses particularly on pilgrimage in Scotland.
Clyde Valley has plenty of surprises, including dramatic ruined castles, industrial heritage, country parks, spectacular scenery and also The Hamilton Mausoleum boasting Europe's longest echo, lasting 22 seconds.
