A whole range of fascinating visitor attractions here includes New Lanark, where the River Clyde flows through a wooded, rocky gorge. The river powered textile mills. Industrialist Robert Owen controlled this development. The New Lanark Visitor Centre tells the story of the doctrine of "Owenism", with its Utopian ideas of workers' welfare, which later became world famous. The Royal Burgh of Lanark was the site of Scotland's first parliament in 978. William Wallace is thought to have formed his first army of resistance here. There's a wealth of award-winning museums in the handsome town of Biggar and Chatelherault near Hamilton is well worth a visit too.
