Overlooking Lochryan, you will find the village of Cairnryan, Scotland. Established in 1701, when Lochryan House was built, this village was an important stop on the stage route to Ayr. However, it was also the favourite location of the famous highwaymen that hijacked these stagecoaches, relieving the passengers of their valuables. During the Second World War, Cairnryan became an important seaport and the building of a military railway helped to link it to the nearby town of Stranraer. This village was home to thousands of American military personnel housed in the camps. It was in this port that the German U-boats surrendered at the end of the war.
Today, Cairnryan is the site of a ferry terminal linking Scotland with Northern Ireland. Visitors to the village will find many different types of lodgings. The Lochryan Hotel is the only hotel in the village, but there are many guesthouses, such as the Homestead, the Merchant’s House and the Auldcairn Guest House, just to name a few. The Cairnryan Caravan Park provides opportunities for camping and RV parking with a spectacular view of the Loch. There are also swimming pools and a play park for the children. The bed and breakfast establishments have dining facilities and there are bakeries throughout the town where you can have refreshments.
The sight of the brightly painted houses set amidst the green rolling hills are a sight that visitors never tire of looking at. The tranquility of walking along the beach and strolling through the village streets will provide you with a most relaxing vacation. You can stand spellbound by the breathtaking scenery and imagine yourself back in time. Drop into the pub and have a chat with the villagers who are always willing to tell you about their lives and their hometown.
