Thornhill Travel Guide

Home > Dumfries & Galloway > Thornhill

River Nith Thornhill is a town of about 2000 people located in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland. Renowned for its exceptional fishing, Thornhill draws many avid fisherpersons to its streams each year. The history of the town was first recorded when it was made a burgh of barony in 1664, but it does date back much farther than that. During the 18th century, it was the estate for the nearby Drumlanrig Castle.

William Douglas, 1st Earl of Queensberry, completed the Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens in 1691. This unique Scottish castle is one place that you should have on your itinerary when you visit Thornhill. It is filled with treasures and offers castle tours and guided walks. Visit rooms in the castle, such as Bonnie Prince Charlie's Bedroom, where he spent a night in 1745. There are magnificent oil paintings in the front hall and throughout the castle that will have you gazing around in wonder.

The area around Thornhill is one of the best sporting areas in the country. There are four privately owned beats on the River Nith where you can enjoy fishing for brown and rainbow trout. The tranquility of the area will provide you with the peaceful setting that you need for your vacation. There are miles of walkways and quiet roads where you can see the beauty of the area and catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife in the area.

Within the stable yard of the castle, you can visit the Drumlanrig Castle Cycle Museum while you are visiting Thornhill. Here you will find a superb collection of bicycles from history, including an original pedal-powered machine and an 1868 velocipede.

The ruin of Morton Castle is another site that you can explore while you are in Thornhill. The castle stands on a promontory above Morton Loch and the ruins date back to the 14th century. There are no guided tours available, but you are free to look around on your own.

There are local riding stables in Thornhill if you enjoy horseback riding. The beautiful Thornhill Golf Course is sure to be a hit with any avid golfers on vacation that are yearning for the chance to tee off in the midst of the beautiful scenery. There is a monument in the town dedicated to Joseph Thomson and there is a winged horse in the centre of the town. This was the emblem of the Queensberry family.

With the wealth of accommodations available in Thornhill, you will find everything geared to your comfort and enjoyment. Take time to drop into the pub and talk with some of the older residents. You will find their stories of the days gone by very fascinating and entertaining. Walk through the streets and stop to chat with the friendly locals. You will make new friends here that will draw you back again and again.
