Thornhill is a town of about 2000 people located in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland. Renowned for its exceptional fishing, Thornhill draws many avid fisherpersons to its streams each year. The history of the town was first recorded when it was made a burgh of barony in 1664, but it does date back much farther than that. During the 18th century, it was the estate for the nearby Drumlanrig Castle. William Douglas, 1st Earl of Queensberry, completed the Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens in 1691. This unique Scottish castle is one place that you should have on your itinerary when you visit Thornhill. It is filled with treasures and offers castle tours and guided walks. Visit rooms in the castle, such as Bonnie Prince Charlie's Bedroom, where he spent a night in 1745. There are magnificent oil paintings in the front hall and throughout the castle that will have you gazing around in wonder.
