Crail is an ancient fishing port and the most easterly port in the Kingdom of Fife. It is a place of peace and tranquility that has a wealth of history for visitors to explore. It first received its royal charter from Robert the Bruce in 1310, which gave the people of the town the right to trade on the Sabbath. It was also the site of one of John Knox’s most violent sermons in the 1500’s. This small village was successfully trading with ports in Europe as early as the 9th century. A stroll through the town to see the architectural styles attests to this fact, with some of the designs coming from Holland. If you like to play golf, the Balcomie Links in Crail is one of the oldest courses in Scotland. For a small town, there is a wealth of attractions – in fact there are so many that you may not get to see them all in one visit. Spend some time at the Crail Heritage Museum or the Scottish Fisheries Museum, where you will be enthralled by the exhibits and displays telling the local history of the area. During the summer months there are several castles in the area that are open to the public.
Enjoy the stunning views when you walk the coastal trails around Crail. Along the way you can stop at the St. Monans Windmill and for the ultimate adventure, charter a boat to do some fishing on the bay. Stop in at Crail Pottery, which is set amidst a spectacular flower garden. When you are in Crail, you are only 15 minutes away from the legendary St. Andrews, where you will find splendid botanical gardens, museums galore and an aquarium, as well as an adventure park where there is something for every member of the family.
