Crail Travel Guide

Crail Harbour Crail is an ancient fishing port and the most easterly port in the Kingdom of Fife. It is a place of peace and tranquility that has a wealth of history for visitors to explore. It first received its royal charter from Robert the Bruce in 1310, which gave the people of the town the right to trade on the Sabbath. It was also the site of one of John Knox’s most violent sermons in the 1500’s. This small village was successfully trading with ports in Europe as early as the 9th century. A stroll through the town to see the architectural styles attests to this fact, with some of the designs coming from Holland.

If you like to play golf, the Balcomie Links in Crail is one of the oldest courses in Scotland. For a small town, there is a wealth of attractions – in fact there are so many that you may not get to see them all in one visit. Spend some time at the Crail Heritage Museum or the Scottish Fisheries Museum, where you will be enthralled by the exhibits and displays telling the local history of the area. During the summer months there are several castles in the area that are open to the public.

Cobbled streets in Crail, East Neuk of Fife Enjoy the stunning views when you walk the coastal trails around Crail. Along the way you can stop at the St. Monans Windmill and for the ultimate adventure, charter a boat to do some fishing on the bay. Stop in at Crail Pottery, which is set amidst a spectacular flower garden.

When you are in Crail, you are only 15 minutes away from the legendary St. Andrews, where you will find splendid botanical gardens, museums galore and an aquarium, as well as an adventure park where there is something for every member of the family. Walk 100feet underground in Scotland's best kept secret the Secret Bunker in East Neuk.

Crail is the site of a church dating back to the 12th century and on the beach in the harbour, you can see fossilized trees that date back to the carboniferous period. This area is one of the best locations in Scotland for bird watching, with the many seabirds that make their nests in the cliffs along the shore. Stroll along Marketgate, which at one time was the largest medieval market in Europe. Near here you will also see No 9 Friary Court, a house that dates back to the late 1600’s and is the perhaps the oldest home in the town.

This town is perhaps the most photographed one in Scotland because of its spectacular beauty. You will certainly want to return time after time to experience its quaint charm. It may also be one of the painted towns in the country, because it is also the location for painting holidays which are conducted by the acclaimed professional artist Gerry Pine. Gerry has been running these art courses in Crail since 1993 and he welcomes artists of all levels and media types. The various courses run from mid May to October, for further information please see the Painting Holidays in Crail website.
