Temporary photograph of a Scottish Thistle till we obtain a picture of Strathmiglo If you are looking for a peaceful rural village in East Fife where you can have a relaxing vacation, then Strathmiglo is the location that you need. This Scottish village has a population of less than 1000 people and is located along the River Eden. It is only 20 miles west of St. Andrews and 32 miles north of Edinburgh. Set against the backdrop of the Lomond Hills, the scenery of the area is breathtaking and will inspire you to take captivating photos to remind you of your visit here.

The River Eden with flows through Strathmiglo used to be called the Miglo. Strath is a Gaelic word meaning broad valley, so the name of the town comes from the combination of these words. During the 7th and 8th centuries, this area was known as the "Church of St. Martin" and appears to have been an important crossroads of all directions through Fife. This crossroads led to the development of the Martinmass Fair at Strathmiglo, which was an annual event here until it was moved to Cupar in 1436.

There used to be a castle in Strathmiglo until the 18th century, when it was destroyed. Many of the stones from the castle were used in the steeple of the tollbooth and the town houses. The Tolbooth dominates High Street, with its open forestair and octagonal shaped spire. There is also a Pictish symbol stone located just outside the cemetery as one of the pieces of evidence that this area has been inhabited for a very long time. In the surrounding countryside, there is evidence of occupation here in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age as well as occupation by the Romans.

Strathmiglo was an important centre for the linen and weaving industries in the 19th century. At that time, it had a population of over 2000 and there were more than 50 stores. However, these businesses no longer exist. There are two manufacturing joineries in the village where most of the people are employed. Tourism is also important to the economy. Many of the people also work in nearby towns and cities and commute from Strathmiglo on a daily basis.

When you visit Strathmiglo, you will have endless opportunities for outdoor activities. There are championship golf courses within easy access of the village as well as the chance to enjoy hillwalking, gliding and fishing. Enjoy a variety of choices in accommodation, all geared to suit your taste and budget. A delicious Scottish breakfast awaits you if you choose to stay in one of the elegant bed and breakfasts and the pub is the centre of the social activity of the village. Here you can get at the heart of the village when you meet the friendly people.
